Kathmandu — As Kaji prepares to open in cinemas on Jestha 8, lead actor Bipin Karki has spoken at length about the film's story, his character, and what makes this love story unlike anything else he has done.
The film had an interesting journey to its current form. Vipin revealed that the original story was different when the project was first proposed to him. "Initially, we had agreed to move forward with a different story for Kaji," he said. "Later, the team came back with a changed story. The story that exists now has a different flavor — one that I personally liked very much."
At the heart of that story is a vision of love that Bipin describes as rare in Nepali cinema: not love expressed through grand gestures or emotional speeches, but through the quiet, daily acts of a couple who find their happiness in each other's wellbeing.
"Love reveals itself in small things," he said. "Finding your own happiness in your wife's happiness, sacrificing for each other — Kaji presents these subtle emotions in a very beautiful way. It's not big dramatic love declarations. It's the small daily moments. That's what the film shows, and I think that's what will stay with audiences."
He added with quiet confidence: "I think after watching this film, audiences will say — Kaji and Kajini's love is what real love looks like."
Vipin also spoke about how being married himself made it easier to access the character's emotional world. "I am a husband myself, so the feelings of this character are things I live in my own life. I didn't need as much preparation as I do for some other roles."
The film is set in the period before 2050 BS, and Vipin's character Kaji is a young man who carries the legacy of a proud family lineage — deeply absorbed in his love, unconcerned with the outside world. "A character who is so immersed in love and so indifferent to everything else was something I hadn't done before," he said. "That made it both a challenge and a genuinely new experience."
Kaji is directed by Laxman Rijal with story by Pradeep Bharadwaj, and stars Vipin Karki and Keki Adhikari alongside Garima Sharma, Prakash Ghimire, Hemant Budathoki, Bishal Pahari, Vinod Neupane, Rashmi Bhatta, Hiunbala Gautam, and others. The film is presented by Ramprasad Rijal under the banner of Rijal and Rijal Production, with cinematography by Chintan Rajbhandari, music by Kaliprasad Baskota, and editing by Bipin Mall. Distribution is by Shriram Balaji Films.
